June 2018

Well, hopefully I'll get this completed and posted before the end of the month, unlike May!

That obviously hasn't happened!  Sorry folks.  I guess life gets in the way of keeping to blogging schedules when it's just an "on the side" thing.

June has been a little quieter because uni is on break, so I've had a bit of time to sit around reading books for fun, and spending all day Tuesdays at art.  I've done a couple of little bits and pieces, but am working on several at a time that are still in progress.

This is the start of the second canvas I began at the end of the Jenni Kelly workshop.

This is a little 6x4 canvas board.  I had a bit of a play with palette knives for this one.  It'll be in the silent auction for the local craft fair in August.

I LOVE watercolour, but I'm really not good with it... yet.  So here's a bit of playing around, trying a few different techniques.

Some more palette knife play.  The paint is quite thick so I only got the first layer of mid-tones down.  Next time will be the highlights and shadows, then finish off with the details.

A bit more work and detail on my Jenni Kelly #2.  Can you see where it's headed?

I got my uni results for my final assignment and laughed like a complete maniac when I read them.  Based on my first two assignments, I expected to get an average or below average grade, but surprisingly did very well.  So my first subject is completely done and dusted and I can move on to the next one!

The Big Fella and I ended up in the big town 2 hours away on one of my Tuesdays off, while the Little Big Fella was at school.  It was nice to spend the day together, chatting while we drove and did our few errands!  Sometimes we don't get a lot of "just us" time, or we squander it getting caught up in all the things that need to be done, and it's always good to remind myself that I like hanging out with my husband, and I need to keep making space for him and us in my life!

The Big Fella loves fire.  Usually a fire with him is a bit extreme (but controlled, of course), so it wasn't surprising that we ended up buying a chimenea for the cooler nights that have finally kicked in.

The Little Big Fella and his mate from next door had another motorbike ride, but the Big Fella couldn't take them.  So I drove the Little Big Fella out, while next door (father and son) rode with him when we got there.  It's so lovely to just sit out there and read, take photos, paint or draw.  I live near some spectacular scenery!

The Little Big Fella's school had their athletics carnival over two days - 1 for field, and 1 for track and ball games.  He got a ribbon for shot putt and did well in high jump and discus.  He even came 2nd in one of his running races, which is a huge thing for him at the moment.

We had the cricket presentations and AGM in June.  It was so good to get together with people who became good friends during the season.  A lovely surprise on the day was that the Little Big Fella won the Most Improved award for his team.  He was so stoked and inspired to play again in the coming season.

During our conversations at the cricket event, our next door neighbours mentioned that they were concerned about the lack of physical activity their son is currently getting.  So they were planning to do a quick fitness session every afternoon at the park and invited the Little Big Fella to participate.  So most afternoons they've been riding their scooters to the park, running around it twice, then doing some push ups, sit ups, step ups, pull ups and whatever else.  It's been good to see them get off the screens for a bit and have a bit more energy for the evening!

As is often the case in winter, I did a fair bit of introverting in June.  I find that the cooler weather and shorter days make me feel like a home body, with little inclination to socialise.  Sometimes it makes me feel down, but I also find it rejuvenates me, and having less expectation on my time gives me a freedom to relax that I don't necessarily have at other times of the year.

Of course, I couldn't home body for the WHOLE month!  A few friends decided to go to our closest town and watch Oceans 8 together.  Thankfully our currently-pregnant friend drove us, so we had a few drinks and got a little rowdy and had a blast.

To be honest, I kind of felt bad for the rest of the people in the cinema, because we fully took over the place as soon as we walked in!  But I think we were more entertaining than annoying, and we didn't get kicked out, so it's all good.

The Big Fella has been roped into a teaching the new trainees at his work.  Last time that meant 15 weeks, 10 of which were three and a half hours away.  This time, he'll be on day shift (Monday to Friday) for a few weeks preparing, then two hours away for four weeks (two of which the Little Big Fella and I will be away), home for three weeks, then away for five weeks at the three and a half hour away place.  It's good because he's getting into stuff that he really enjoys, but being away so much really does suck.

But more to all of that next month!  July was HUGE so there'll be plenty of photos and lots to tell!
