Let me just say this upfront: DRINK YOUR WATER PEOPLE!!!!! Seriously, it hurts if you don't!
Okay, so earlier last week the Little Big Fella had a bit of a temperature at night, then the next few nights had a bit of a cough. So on Saturday morning, when I started feeling achy in my joints, I thought I'd either pushed too hard in my workout, or was coming down with a flu. My throat was a bit sore as well.
Even with the aid of ibuprofen, by that night I was in a fair bit of pain. The Big Fella's parents were staying with us for a couple of days (to hang out with the Little Big Fella before school starts) and his mum found me crying because of the pain and exhaustion. Eventually I got to sleep and thought it would all be okay.
The next morning (Sunday) I woke up feeling okay. The Big Fella's parents left and we went next door for a playdate. I sat around talking with the other mums all morning and mostly felt fine.
When the others had all left the Little Big Fella still didn't want to go and was invited to stay and play for a while. I was chatting with my neighbour and suddenly felt quite faint. I told her I had to go and practically raced over the fence and upstairs, dumped my stuff on the bench, told the Big Fella I thought I was going to faint and sat on the couch.
The next thing I knew, I was having a whole bunch of pictures flashing through my head and I was attempting to focus on the Big Fella. Apparently I'd turned white as paper, my eyes rolled up and I passed out, stopped breathing, and my arms flapped around a bit. I only knew I was really tired and just wanted to lie down on our beautifully comfy couch.
The Big Fella called the hospital and asked them about what had happened, then spoke to our neighbour, asking if the Little Big Fella could stay while he took me up to the hospital.
I felt nauseous on that drive! And I'm pretty sure the Big Fella was speeding at least the first half of the way there.
We got to emergency and went in to triage where my blood pressure, heart rate and temperature were checked and all the standard questions asked. He also pinched my skin in a few places, which apparently told him that I was dehydrated.
Then he went off to talk to the doctor.
We waited.
And we both fell asleep. The Big Fella had done a night shift and still hadn't been to bed, so he was exhausted. And I'd gotten straight on the bed and laid down as soon as we arrived.
We both woke up, possibly an hour later, because we were cold. That room was kind of icy! About another 20 minutes later the doctor came in, asked a few more questions, checked a few more things then told me that I probably had an infection in my liver, bladder or urinary tract and that I was dehydrated. They were admitting me to receive antibiotics and fluids by IV.
"Okay", I said, "can I please have a blanket?"
But instead of a blanket, they took me to a room, with the heater on, and a relatively comfy bed, and a blanket. My teeth kept shivering for a couple of minutes though.
Has anyone been in hospital recently? They have these beds, the nurse called it an airbed, and they blow up and down in different places depending on how you lay/sit on it! It's kind of freaky! So when you lay on your back, it adjusts, then if you move your legs, it adjusts. If you put the head up a bit or move it to sitting position, it adjusts. And sometimes the adjustment isn't that comfortable either. It's to help reduce the chance of bedsores.
Well, after I stopped shivering, the nurse came in to put in my canula (the thing they put in your arm that the IV fluids go through). And let me say it again; DRINK YOUR WATER, PEOPLE!!!
Normally I don't have any trouble having blood taken for tests or whatever. I don't like needles, but it's not normally an issue. But because I was dehydrated, the veins were hard to find and kept moving around, so getting the canula in was really hard.
The first nurse tried twice on my right arm. The second nurse tried twice on my left arm. And then they got the doctor in, who got it in my left arm first try. But each of these were more painful than the last, and when the doctor got it in, it really hurt.
The Big Fella headed home to get some things for me, as we'd been told I'd be staying overnight by this time. He came back with the Little Big Fella after they'd had their evening meal. The Little Big Fella had eaten jelly with berries in it. I knew because it was all over him!
By the time they got there I was starting to feel much better. I could even sit up without feeling dizzy!
After a bit of a chat and a big hug each, my Fellas headed back home. Poor Little Big Fella started to get a little upset that I wasn't coming home with them, but settled well enough with another hug and a bit of a chat.
I put a status update on Facebook and immediately had half a dozen friends offer to help me, or look after the Little Big Fella, or bring whatever I needed. I am honestly SO lucky to have found such wonderful friends in our little town.
The night was long and uncomfortable. Keeping your arm straight all night is tricky, and led to me sleeping in pretty much the same position all night. And despite my "air bed", it got uncomfortable.
During the night a helicopter landed outside my window (well, not right outside but it was definitely loud enough to seem like it). And the old man in the next room was rather loud, with moaning and groaning and talking to the nurses. Thankfully I was in a room by myself though, so that was helpful.
In the morning I got a visit from my Fellas, which made my day! There's nothing like visitors in hospital, and nothing like your two favourite people visiting.
When the doctors did their rounds I was told that, as long as I drank at least four 600ml bottles of water a day, I could go home when my final bag of fluids was finished.
Unfortunately, the Big Fella had to start work before then, so the Little Big Fella went to his best friend's house and I got a ride home with another friend who happened to be in town having lunch.
Being home was SO good! Being able to move around without having to ask a nurse to disconnect me and then drag the IV stand around was absolutely awesome! And sleeping in my own bed... heaven!
So now I need to take some tablets for a few days and see my doctor next week to follow up. And drink lots of water!!!! I don't think the Big Fella will let me get away with not drinking water ever again :-)
I'm ScooterShell, wife of the Big Fella, and Mummy to the Little Big Fella. We live in a small, semi-outback town in central Queensland, Australia and we love it here! This blog helps me keep friends and family up-to-date with what's happening (I'm notoriously bad at long-distance relationships), and is where I explore some of the deeper thoughts about life. I hope you enjoy it!

Play time!
Oh my goodness!!! It's been so long since I've written a post, you probably thought I'd disappeared off the face of the earth!!!
So! We need to do a little catch up on all the play time we've been having this past couple of weeks!
A couple of weekends ago, the Big Fella was away fishing so I had the girls over for an evening. I wrote a little about that here.
The Big Fella came home and we had three big days in a row. Thursday we went to our nearest "city" - 2 hours away on the coast. The Big Fella had a specialist appointment and a medical test to do. And we did some shopping and had a restaurant meal.
The Little Big Fella and I spent some time at the major shopping centre getting a few bits and pieces done while the Big Fella was doing his testing. They have the trolleys that look like a car and the Little Big Fella just fit in. It was the easiest shopping I've done in ages!
I also let him have a go on one of those shopping centre rides. Can't make it completely painful for him, right?
We found out that the Big Fella's kidney issues are in remission, which is amazing! He's been working really hard to lose weight and eat better, and he's mostly cut out alcohol except on special occasions. Turns out that looking after yourself can make a major difference in his particular case. We also got a bit more information about what's good and bad for him and other things that can help.
I got to spend over an hour in Spotlight (a craft supplies and homewares store), and even though I had the Little Big Fella with me, I had a ball!!! Sigh. I miss living near a Spotlight.
The next night was the school fair. I helped with some of the preparation in the morning then got all dressed up in the evening and tied balloon animals and swords all night. I had lots of flashbacks to previous balloon-tying events (like Easterfest for you Mountsiders who might remember it, and Master's Commission).
I made myself a tulle skirt. It's the first sewing I've done in ages and didn't quite come out how I'd hoped, but it worked well. I ended up wearing it for our Halloween walk too.
I also did some fun, fairy-style makeup.
This was taken at the end of the night and I'd lost some of my diamantes. It's not quite as dramatic as I wanted, but I think that's because the makeup I have is for every day, not for stage or events. Oh! And I was wearing a bright pink wig. I'd forgotten how hot and annoying wigs are!!!!
The Little Big Fella mostly loved the fair. They had a merry-go-round, jumping castle, huge slide and 4WD buggies. You could buy tickets for each ride or a wrist band for unlimited use. Because I was tying balloons all night, and the Big Fella was at work, the Little Big Fella got to just go from ride to ride all night. I stood near the rides and he just came over whenever he needed me to drive him in the buggies (you had to be 8 years or older to drive them).
By about 9:30 the Little Big Fella was done so I tied my last balloons and carried him to the car.
That night the Little Big Fella was sick. He woke at about 11:30 and then we were up and down until about 3am. As horrible as it is being sick yourself, watching your child go through it, and not being able to relieve it, knowing you just have to go through it... it's pretty hard core.
Thankfully he was feeling much better and even had some food on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night was a "Girl's Night In" breast cancer fundraiser at the football club. Like having the girls over the week before, it was fun and full of laughter. There were games and prizes and costumes and dancing. There was even a mob of kangaroos on the grounds... until the girls chased them in an attempt to catch one. And there was fire twirling too. It was a really fun night.
I was pretty tired after the last few days and the night of little sleep. And the Big Fella had to start work just after midnight, so I headed off around 11:30.
And that was another weekend down!
We had the Halloween walk last night, which was brilliant, and we're off to a craft night at the CWA hall tonight. I did a bunch of crafty things for Halloween, but I'll do a post on that (I already promised it last week, didn't I?) separately because there's a few photos and I want to give you the time and space to admire :D
So, for now, adios amigos! Thanks for sticking with me when I go through the less write-y times :)

Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
No! Please! No!!!!
After arriving safely home from our little rollover, the Little Big Fella proceeded to get rather sick with a cold. He was particularly sooky and woke several times a night (read: about once an hour) for about 4 nights.
Being exhausted, I proceeded to get rather sick with a cold. Fantastic!
But my cold seemed to be slightly different.
His was a little coughing, runny nose, sooky, need-my-mummy cold.
Mine was a stuffy nose, blocked sinuses, headache kind of cold. I tried antihistamines, nasal sprays, steam therapy. Nothing made a spot of difference.
Given that we're still car-less, I didn't even attempt to see a doctor and just lived through it.
Monday was the first time I was able to breathe for a few hours on my own. Yesterday was pretty good too. Today has been pretty much 100%.
The Little Big Fella went to bed a little early tonight. No big deal - he had soccer this afternoon and had been playing for much of the day.
About an hour into sleep, I heard him making tiny little cries. I listened and it stopped so I ignored it.
Just now he woke up crying and coughing a croup-y sounding cough.
Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!
After crying and not communicating for a few minutes I cracked it (mildly) at him, insisting that I needed him to tell me what was wrong (I'd been asking him specific questions with no response) so that I could do something that might actually help.
We eventually settled on some cough medicine and Neurofen.
He settled down a bit and I asked him a few more questions:
"Can you breathe through your nose?"
"No."
"Does it hurt here? (Touching his sinus area)"
"Yes."
Internally, my immediate response was, "oh shit"!
Just this afternoon I was talking to his best friends' mum at soccer. We'd both had the same high pressure sinus thing that nothing would help and we were thankful that the kids hadn't had it, imagining how painful it would be to nurse them through that.
Looks like I might be about to find out!

Visits and shopping
As promised, here is another "catch-up" post from all that we've been up to this month.
The week after my brother was here, the Fellas and I drove back to our old town to visit family, for the Big Fella to get a root canal, and to collect the last of our belongings that had been stored in my Poppy's shed.
My grandparents moved interstate when I was four or five years old. As we were growing up, I only got to see them about once a year, and I felt that I'd missed out on something really special because of it.
Then, when the Big Fella and I first moved to Queensland, we ended up living with my grandparents for two or three months. It was hard for everyone initially, but we got to know each other well and became great friends. It is an absolute pleasure to me to now watch my son having the opportunity to know and love his great-grandparents!
Anyway, when we first arrived at my grandparents' place, I had quite a shock. Poppy has just recently had a knee reconstruction and managed to get blood poisoning in the hospital. They didn't pick it up and sent him home. Thankfully he had a checkup with his surgeon a couple of days later, and was readmitted immediately. By the time we got there, Poppy had been back home for a few days and was on the mend.
But walking in and seeing him was a shock! His skin was grey and he looked 10 years older than when I'd seen him in December. Talk about confronting!!!
Thankfully within a few hours he was looking more like himself. I think that the Big Fella had a lot to do with that - they're great friends, which is kind of amazing given that they didn't like each other when they met!
Over the next three days, I noticed that Poppy's knee was less swollen and he was able to do more. So he's definitely mending, which is such a relief.
Okay, lets move on to other things.
The Little Big Fella had such a good time playing with his cousins! He misses them so much, and that really is the thing I feel worst about with our move here. I've no doubt they'll be great friends, but I guess when we lived closer they were almost like siblings.
I've been reflecting a little over the past few months that it would have been wonderful for the Little Big Fella to have a sibling. Unfortunately I wasn't mentally capable and now that he's just about to start school I'm not willing to go back to the baby and nappies stage.
Oh my goodness, this post is getting rather dreary, isn't it???
Let me tell you about the very fun part of our visit! We went shopping!
Now, when I say "we went shopping" I don't mean a little bit here and there. I mean we. went. shopping!!!!
We finally found office furniture that we like (I've been looking for months!!!), and a dining setting/buffet/entertainment unit that we both like. I ordered the office furniture as soon as we got home and it arrived the other day. I'll show it to you when I've got it all together :-) The other stuff will be ordered in a few weeks I think.
We went to the sports store and ended up with two pairs of shoes each, a footy for the Little Big Fella, some extra dumbells and weight plates... I think there was something else too.
The Big Fella went to our old butcher and ended up buying, literally, a deep freezer full of meat! Here comes the jerky :-D
I bought some black beans, which are a little difficult to get here and are expensive to buy online.
Okay, I bought a lot of black beans.
I'd never used them until recently, but I have a recipe from the Dessert Angel for "Belly Fat Burning Brownies". They have no flour and no sugar but are high in fibre and protein, and they taste FANTASTIC!!! Even the Fellas love them! And everywhere I've taken them people have loved them too, and asked for the recipe.
So, I bought a massive bag of black beans :-)
The Little Big Fella and I went to Bunnings. I love that store!!! Apparently there's a little one opening in our closest large town sometime this year. Guess that'll make it heaven :-D
From Bunnings I bought new fittings for the bathroom. I know, we're in a company house! But I wanted fittings that suited our lifestyle and matched the rest of the room so I bought some.
I also got some paint. Our playgroup was getting rid of a few bits and pieces when we moved to the CWA hall at the start of the year, and I decided to keep a stand/rack for hanging up costumes and hats. It needs a bit of cleaning up, so I decided to buy some bright, dark blue paint, which will go really nicely with the Little Big Fella's new bed, and the freshly painted walls. Don't worry, I'll show you pics when it's done :-)
So, obviously, as well as all this shopping we spent time with my family and everyone had a great time. I absolutely love that spending time with my family is fun, not a stress. I feel particularly lucky!
Okay, that's the end of this update! But don't worry, there'll be more!!! :-D
Oh my goodness!!! I totally forgot to put in the photos from our visit!!! I ended up taking my camera, specifically with the CWA photo competition in mind - not because I think I'll win anything, but because it's another way to support what's happening in our local community. I took a bunch of pics of the Little Big Fella playing in the playground, and had a go at some more abstract-style photos.
Anyway, here you go!
There you go! Hope you enjoyed it :-D

Have you ever...?
I got rather cross last night.
Our Little Big Fella went to bed with a bit of a cough and runny nose and I knew it was going to be a night of broken sleep. Sure enough, a couple of hours after bed he woke, coughing and crying.
I went in to try to soothe him and see if there was any way of relieving him.
But over the past few weeks our Little Big Fella has developed a bit of a self-pitying, tantrum-ing side, and it displayed itself in full last night!
You see, instead of allowing me to comfort him, the Little Big Fella indulged in a nice big dose of self-pity, crying pitifully. This, of course, set his coughing off even more intensely, making him cry more, cough more and so on.
I switched from soothing-Mummy mode to "stop that or you'll make yourself sick"-Mummy mode.
Sure enough, he'd upset himself enough, and caused his coughing to develop to the extent that he literally was sick.
All over himself, his bed, and me.
Have you ever done that to yourself? I recall getting pretty close a couple of times, but never actually going that far (Mum, you're welcome to contradict me on that one of course!).
Although, I guess there is also the fact that I used to cry so hard I passed out when I was about his age!
What did you do as a child that was over-the-top?

Have you ever done that to yourself? I recall getting pretty close a couple of times, but never actually going that far (Mum, you're welcome to contradict me on that one of course!).
Although, I guess there is also the fact that I used to cry so hard I passed out when I was about his age!
What did you do as a child that was over-the-top?

Request denied!
Before I had my son, I pretty much took it for granted that I could sleep whenever I wanted to. If I went to bed at 10:30, I'd probably be asleep by 11 and it would be unusual for me to wake up before my alarm at, say, 7. Eight hours sleep, pretty much guaranteed.
Even now that the Little Big Fella mostly sleeps through, it's unusual for me to get an uninterrupted night of sleep. Add any illness, change in weather, odd food, over-full bladders, and a shift working husband, and the likelihood of a full night of sleep is pretty low.
It feels like I have to fill out a request form every night before I go to bed: Please can I have a full night of sleep?
Request denied!
And, of course, every time you're most desperate for a big sleep it won't happen.
The Little Big Fella has been sick this week with a cold, so he's been coughing and crying, and (this is a little odd) wetting his bed. Then, surprise, surprise, I came down with it yesterday afternoon.
By the time we ate dinner at 6pm, I was just about falling asleep at the table. The Big Fella was already at work so I couldn't just slink off to bed.
I went and had a hot shower while the Little Big Fella finished eating then showered him and put him to bed. He didn't fall asleep until about 8:30.
Request denied!
I went to bed and guess what! I couldn't go to sleep!!! Gah!!!!!
I think I finally fell asleep a bit after 9 and got 3 glorious hours of deep sleep.
Request denied!
About midnight all the dogs in the neighbourhood started barking, ours included. I yelled at them to go to sleep but they ignored me, which normally means something is in the yard. So I drag my sorry self out of bed and put a warm jacket on because I know it's cold outside.
The dogs are still barking so I yell at them and they come to me, hoping to be allowed inside.
Request denied!
Then I see a couple of people hanging out across the road next to the horse paddock. Thanks very much folks.
Eventually they move on and the dogs stop trying to bark.
When I go inside I realise the Big Fella will be home from work soon so when I get back in bed, my brain won't let me sleep because it's too busy listening out for him.
Request denied!
Eventually I hear him come home and fall into deep sleep again... until he comes to bed an hour or so later and is absolutely frozen! The house was fairly cool and he sat on the couch watching the Olympics for a while, without turning on the heater or putting a blanket over him. So I was awake for another half hour or so trying to warm him up. In hindsight, I should have sent him off for a hot shower or hot water bottle!!! ;-)
Asleep again?
Request denied!
The Little Big Fella wakes up with a nightmare at about 4am, then gets a nice coughing fit going on because he was crying. I'm not allowed to leave or give him anything to try to stop the coughing so I get the spare doona and wrap myself up because I'm cold by this stage. Eventually he falls asleep (about 45 minutes later) and I'm allowed to go back to bed, which by this time is cold.
Sleep? Request denied!
I lay there for at least half an hour trying to warm myself and my side of the bed up before finally falling asleep again for a couple of hours.
So, I'm putting in my request early today. I have a really good reason to need sleep tonight! I've looked after myself all day and I just need a good sleep to help my body repair itself. Please???

Gross me out!!!!
I didn't take a picture.
Maybe I should have.
No, definitely not!
I've cleaned my toilet several times (as you'd hope) since we've moved it but it never seemed properly clean. So I pulled it apart today. You know, un-did the annoying plastic screw thingys underneath that hold the seat onto the porcelain?
If you have a weak stomach DO NOT CONTINUE READING!!!!!
So I pulled the lid off and there, on the porcelain where the seat rests, and on the bottom of the seat that rests there, was a relatively thick layer of poo!
I'm gagging just writing this!
Maybe I shouldn't post it?
Meh!
I can understand pee spray (especially with a little boy in the house!) but how on Earth do you get poo in there???
I'm getting those horrible shivers up and down my spine!!!
The Big Fella was home when I was doing this and suggested we just chuck it and go buy a new one. But I was able to clean it up (I had to get an old toothbrush out for the job and yes! it is now in the bin) and now we have a clean, sparkly loo!
Yay!
Every time I use it now I see it sparkling back at me and it makes me smile :-D
(Yes, it is late and I should be in bed!)

Wee wee wee wee all the way home
Being a Mum, you get to experience some amazingly beautiful moments with your child and partner.
This is not one of them!
WARNING: This is a bodily functions story from a Mum. If you think it might be too much information, please don't keep reading.
Yesterday morning the Little Big Fella woke up around 4:30 having wet his bed. No big deal, we change his sheets (thank God for the invention of mattress protectors!), give him a little wash, put on clean pjs and get him back to sleep.
Later he wakes up complaining of a sore tummy and doesn't get out of bed to eat sausages for breakfast. Then he didn't want to go with Daddy to cut down some trees with the Lion's Club using the new chainsaw.
Something was definitely wrong!
The Little Big Fella stayed in bed all day, only getting up to use the toilet and crying when he had to do that. I ended up changing his sheets 3 times throughout the day, and giving lots of hugs and reassurance.
He ate nothing! And only drank some lemonade and cordial.
By the afternoon he had liquid green poo (you can't see the face I'm making but it was gross!).
I think he watched almost every kids DVD we own yesterday and was only out of bed for a total of 20 minutes.
On the up side, I did get to put away a lot of things that didn't have homes yet so now the dining table isn't surrounded by junk! And I've moved a few things around in the office so I can actually find things. We might even do a craft project this week!
In the evening the Little Big Fella woke up crying again. I picked him up and gave him a hug and carried him with me to the kitchen because I was in the middle of making pizzas. All of a sudden I feel warmth... and start moving very quickly toward the bathroom!!!! Yep, I got peed on.
We then had a little shower together, with him crying the whole time, then put him back to bed.
Overnight he woke a couple of times and had a light fever at one point, but no more accidents (yay!). And this morning he came into our bed for about an hour (and thankfully, no accidents there either).
He actually sounded quite cheerful first thing this morning and has eaten a little bit. His tummy doesn't seem to be hurting him as much now, but he does still have a temperature.
I'm hoping that he's just had a little 24 hour bug that apparently is going around town. He's certainly having more moments of normality and even sat on the couch for a while this morning.
So there you go. A day in the life of a mother with a sick child. Really makes you want to be a parent right???
But actually, it reminds me how grateful I am that my son is generally healthy. Yesterday I read the birth story of a lady who had a little girl with Downs Syndrome. They didn't know before she was born and thepain agony of grief in those first 24 hours broke my heart. Of course, she loves her daughter and reading how she overcame the intensity of that grief and how it became absolute unconditional love was amazing.
Her story reminded me to be aware of the great gift my son is. And to make the most of every day as much as we can... even the gross ones :-D
